Eric Church

Outsiders Radio: Episode #9

October 30, 2015

AIR DATE: OCT 2015

Hey everybody, it’s Eric Church, back for the NINTH episode of “Outsiders Radio” heard exclusively on The Highway. It’s THE END OF OCTOBER, hopefully by now we’re getting better at this. And you guessed it. It is Halloween everywhere… especially at my house. I got two little boys all about some Halloween right now. So I thought this show we would spin some spooky tunes for you guys to get in the mood… here we go!

“The Legend of Wooley Swamp” 4:18 – Charlie Daniels Band – The Essential

“Midnight in Montgomery” 3:45 – Alan Jackson – Don’t Rock The Jukebox

Very nice. You guys feel me, where I’m going? Charlie Daniels, “The Legend of Wooley Swamp”, and Alan Jackson’s tale about Hank Sr., “Midnight in Montgomery… This is Eric Church on Outsiders Radio and yes, you really are listening to The Highway. oh yeah…here’s a couple more.

“Long Black Veil” 3:06 – The Band – Music From Big Pink

“Marie Laveau” 3:10 – Bobby Bare – Super Hits

Eric Church here, and you’re listening to Outsiders Radio. That was two of my all time favorites. The first one was “Long Black Veil” by The Band, and that’s from Music From Big Pink, and on one hand, that’s a desert island album for me. It just meant so much to me and the DNA of who I am musically. And that was followed by Bobby Bare with “Marie Laveau”, which was written by Shel Silverstein, who to me is still one of the most brilliant writers of all time. I read that song was actually modeled after a real-life, 19th-century, New Orleans Voodoo priestess of the same name and Bobby took the recording all the way to Number One back in 1974. You can still hear it today with Willie on Willie’s Roadhouse. Alright Johnny…give it to us.

“(Ghost) Riders In The Sky” 3:45 – Johnny Cash – Silver

“Psycho” 3:36 – Eddie Noack – Psycho

“(It’s A) Monster’s Holiday” 2:45 – Buck Owens – Halloween Music & Sounds

“Ghost Riders In The Sky” performed by the one and only Johnny Cash, followed by one of the darkest songs of 1968, hell with 1968, it’s one of the darkest songs ever. “Psycho” by Eddie Noack. Eddie didn’t receive a whole lot of airplay on that one, which I know something about. Apparently, serial killers don’t research that well… After that we lightened the mood a bit with a sort of countrified “monster mash”… It’s A Monster’s Holiday by Buck Owens. Which actually was one I had to look up. We were looking for Halloween songs and there’s one I discovered. Here’s another one that apparently didn’t research too well….Didn’t matter, they played it on The Highway.

“Creepin’” 3:53 – Eric Church – Chief

“Phantom 309” 3:27 – Red Sovine – Phantom 309

“Werewolves of London” 3:29 – Warren Zevon – Excitable Boy

Phantom 309 by Red Sovine from 1967, and the late, great Warren Zevon with “Werewolves of London”. If you aren’t familiar with Warren’s album, Excitable Boy, check it out. There is some amazing song on there from one of the best songwriters of all time. You have found Outsiders Radio, I’m Eric Church, and I don’t want to lose our mood so let’s keep it rolling with Creedence.

“I Put A Spell On You” 4:32 – CCR – Chronicle

“Highway to Hell” 3:28 – AC/DC – Highway to Hell

“Frankenstein” 4:46 – The Edgar Winter Group – Best Of

“I Put A Spell On You” by C.C.R., written by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, backstopped by AC/DC’s “Highway To Hell” and the Edgar Winter Groups classic instrumental “Frankenstein”. Spooky enough for you… I do hope so. And… well, we have to go here… and hopefully as you listen to this next one, the video will play in your head. ‘Til next time…see you guys and Happy Halloween.

“Thriller” – 5:57 – Michael Jackson – Thriller
